What is Bitcoin? The Original Cryptocurrency Explained

Bitcoin is the first decentralized digital currency — money that moves over the internet without banks, payment processors or any central authority. It was described in a 2008 whitepaper published under the name Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in January 2009.

The problem it solved

Before Bitcoin, digital money had a fatal flaw: a digital coin is just data, and data can be copied. Preventing the same coin from being spent twice required a trusted middleman — a bank. Bitcoin solved this double-spend problem with a public ledger that thousands of independent computers maintain together.

How it works

Every Bitcoin transaction is recorded on the blockchain — a chain of blocks, each cryptographically linked to the previous one. Computers called miners compete to add the next block by solving a mathematical puzzle (proof of work). The winner earns newly created bitcoin plus transaction fees. Changing history would require redoing all that work, which makes the ledger practically immutable.

Why only 21 million

Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins, written into the protocol itself. Roughly every four years the mining reward halves — an event known as the halving — slowing new issuance over time. This programmed scarcity is central to the "digital gold" argument.

Why it matters

Bitcoin proved that value can be transferred globally, permissionlessly and around the clock — an idea that spawned the entire cryptocurrency industry, from smart-contract platforms to exchange ecosystems and utility tokens.

The risks

Bitcoin remains volatile: large price swings are normal, regulation varies by country, and self-custody puts responsibility for security on you. Understand these trade-offs before getting involved.
